DeBox desktop environment.

DeBox?

DeBox desktop environment is a new way to make a desktop for the Debian based O.S. DeBox it is not designed to be over-powerful but to be usable and slim enough, and keep the resource usage low for your favorite programs. Different from the majority of desktop environments, it does not tightly integrate every component but use external programs following the unix spirit of tiny single-task tools. So DeBox it's just a mix of various Linux programs (Adeskbar, Openbox, Pcman File manager and tint2) that create a new lightweight, fast and i think beautiful desktop environment. And is GPL...

Why you call it DeBox?

DeBox or DeBoX is Debian + openbox (or *box).

I like it... How I can help to make DeBox better?

Test DeBox in various Linux distros, send your feedback and your improvements to giorgos1971(at)libero.it. At the next DeBox release (1.4) will be included every good idea. Art works (wallpaper, logos, icons etc) are also welcome.

Few tips for DeBox 1.3 version.

##Please use debox with Debian 5.0 Stable (“lenny” Release). If you try it on Ubuntu you need some tweaks e.g change tint2 to tint in the /usr/bin/DeBoX.

##The new version (23/1/2010) is 1.3.1. The major change of the 1.3.xx version is that the dock is not the awn but the adeskbar. It' s sure that works with .... xcompmgr 1.1.4-0.1, adeskbar 0.1.7-2 (and the 0.1.7-4 with some problems), pcmanfm 0.5-3, tint2 0.7.1-1, screenlets 0.1.2-3, xscreensaver 5.05-3, gnome-icon-theme-suede 0.2.5-1. And the optional files... elisa 0.3.5-3, iceweasel 3.0.6-3, grip 3.3.1-15+b2 openoffice.org 1:2.4.1+dfsg-1+lenny3, gimp 2.4.7-1 .

##The basic file is the /usr/bin/DeBoX that handle every aspect of this desktop. Edit it and make your hacks... (for example change xcompmgr to "xcompmgr -cCfF -t-5 -l-5 -r4.2 -o.55 -D6", activate screenlets, put conky etc.). Once you install it you have a dock that you can put everything that you need (just go to /usr/share/applications and then put the application in your dock using the preferences menu of adeskbar).

##If you use a nvidia card put this lines at your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Section "Extensions"

Option "Composite" "enable"

EndSection

##If you have a ATI video card see the site of Compiz http://www.compiz-fusion.org/ (use it also for the nvidia cards).

##Relax and be ready for the DeBox Desktop...
